Nigel Barriffe. Following a 20-year career in the business and IT sectors, Nigel Barriffe decided to switch gears and enter the teaching profession to give back to the community that had given him so much. Today, he is an elementary school teacher with the Toronto District School Board.
Barriffe holds the roles of public relations officer with the African Heritage Educators Network and program development committee member with the Canadian Alliance of Black Educators. As if that weren’t enough, Barriffe also acts as a staff resident in one of Toronto’s custody facilities for at-risk youth. It is a role that provides him with firsthand experience mentoring marginalized youth who have been confronted with many social, emotional and legal challenges.
“I am truly inspired by these kids. Today there is so much out there that opposes their success — drugs, gangs, etc. But despite it all, they have a capacity to endure and a thirst to learn. Each day I come into work thankful for what I do. It is an absolutely amazing experience.”
